The main temple is dedicated to Bhagavan Manguesh, an incarnation of Shiva. Bhagavan Mangesh is worshipped here as Shiva linga. According to the legend, Shiva had manifested into a tiger to scare his wife Parvati.

Shri Manguesh temple is located at Mangeshi Village in Priol, Ponda taluk, Goa. It is at a distance of 1 km from Mardol close to Nagueshi, 21 km from Panaji the capital of Goa, and 26 km from Margao. Shree Mangueshi is the Kuldeva of Goud Saraswat Brahman.

Who built Mangeshi temple in Goa?

It was only until the middle of the 18th century, Ramchandra Sukhtankar, a respected general in the Maratha court revived the linga from its place and convinced the Raja of Sonda, to donate land for constructing the temple and providing funds for its maintenance.

Mangesh is the Goan name for Lord Shiva. Upon their arrival in Goa in the 16th C, the Portuguese destroyed hundreds of Hindu temples in a savage frenzy of religious violence. Among them were the three great temples to Shiva: Saptakoteshwar, Ramnath, and Mangesh.

When was Mangeshi temple built?

When the Portuguese captured Salcete in 1543, devotees moved the deity of Mangeshi to a nearby village that took the name of the temple. The temple as you see today was built in 1744 originally, using donations of a local Maratha ruler. Over the years, the temple has seen several renovations and has been rebuilt too.
